  1. What a great photo!

How much do you think your dinner cost including the prices of seeds? And how much do you think it would cost if you bought the organic ingredients from the store?

    Very cool blog

  2. I could only guesstimate since I did not know I'd be documenting my lifestyle so I haven't kept any records.

The chicken probaly cost us about $12.00 to raise and butcher. $3.00 to have it butchered and the remainder for food and other expenses, excluding the cost of materials to build housing.

As for the vegetables, we've basically made money off of growing them so it would be a negative number. In total I spent $70 on the seeds for the entire garden and still have plenty left over for next year.

I don't think it's fair to compare these veggies with organic ones from a large grocery store. They are not exactly of the same quality and freshness. Almost apples and oranges.

In conclusion it would be more expensive to purchase and prepare a similar meal from the grocery store and it would be inferior.

  3. How do you mean you made money off growing your veggies and it would be a negative number? Because you didn't have to spend the money on groceries that you would without the garden? I don't get it

  4. Well, if we were to purchase the amount of veggies we have grown this year from say a Farmer's market or even the grocery store, which we would have done had we not grown our own, the figure would be over a couple hundred dollars where it has cost us only a small fraction of that to grow our own. So yes, we have saved that money we would have normally spent on vegetables.
