Flower Gardening.

Year One.

When we first bought our new home, one of the first things my mother and I did was gussy up the front flower bed. It had been planted with these two lilac bushes that weren't receiving enough sun to bloom properly and we eventually took out. There was also a day lily in the middle that was far from thriving and a few random bulbs here and there. This is a shot after Mom and I weeded for probably most of one day.

Struggling Day Lily.

Replanted Day Lily.

A pleasant surprise to find out that there were grape hyacinths planted in the flower bed, along with yellow  crocus.

We had one lilac bush that was planted on it's own in the middle of the lawn. It thrived and produced tons of fragrant flowers that year.

That is about it! I did not do too much additional flower gardening until the following spring when we took the lilac bushes out of this bed and made room for other flowers. We removed this railroad tie and the patio stones to expand this bed.

Here's a picture from early last Spring to show how far we've come with this transformation.

Expanded the front bed and added additional beds on either side.

There will be even more bulbs and perennials this year. I can't wait. I did not plant all the bulbs in these beds. After removing the lilac bushes and amending the soil greatly, some bulbs came up that the previous owners had planted. The red tulips, some pink tulips, a whole whack of double daffodils and a lot of grape hyacinths were rejuvenated.
